Ran a Cat 340F on deep utility and foundation work. The hydraulic response is what stood out for me. It has plenty of flow for buckets and attachments, and the boom setup feels steady when lifting or digging near its reach limit. The standard and economy modes are useful; I used economy for normal trenching and saved it for when the job did not need full output. It is a heavy 42-ton machine though, so transport and tight sites need planning.

Cab controls sound pretty straightforward. The touchscreen plus jog dial is easier than digging through a pile of buttons, and Operator ID saving joystick settings is handy when more than one driver uses it. Stick Steer would be on my option list, especially on tight sites. Payload, grade assist and lift assist can take some hassle out of repetitive work. Cold-start warmup is useful too. Not everyone needs all the grade tech though, and it adds to the spec cost.

Ran a Cat 340 on hard digging and truck loading work. The wider track and 7.5-ton counterweight make a real difference when you are reaching out with a larger bucket. It feels planted, and the Auto Dig Boost helps when the face gets tight. Three engine modes are useful too; Smart mode makes more sense for normal digging than running flat out all day. It is still a 40-ton machine, so purchase and transport costs will not be light.

The service side is what caught my eye. Oil and fuel filters are on matching 1,000-hour intervals, so you are not stopping the machine all the time for separate jobs. Product Link tracking and remote fault-code checks can also save some chasing around, especially with a machine working away from the workshop. The C9.3B engine has a strong service-hours claim, and the air intake pre-cleaner plus reversible fan option make sense in dusty work. Still, remote diagnostics are useful, but they don’t replace a decent fitter when something mechanical goes wrong.

The service side looks well thought out on this Cat. Oil and fuel filters line up at 1,000 hours, which means fewer stops and fewer filter changes over a long hire period. The pre-cleaner intake and reversible fan option also matter on dusty jobs. Reinforced structures are welcome if you use a hammer a lot. I would still keep an eye on the electronics and grade kit, since there is more stuff on board than a basic digger.

The cab setup looks well thought out. Heated air-suspension seat comes with the Deluxe cab, while Premium adds ventilation, which matters on long summer shifts. I also like the tilt-up left console; getting in and out is less awkward. Touchscreen plus jog dial is simple enough, and Operator ID saving joystick settings is handy when several operators share the excavator. Stick Steer is optional though, and I would want it for a machine doing much travel around site.
